Francisco Tomás, rector of the University of Valencia at the time of going to press (February 2008), presents this university as "the Valencia higher education institution with the widest range of studies and greatest number of teaching centres, department and research institutes". This current significance has been built up over several centuries, conforming the University we know today. The pursuit of consolidated prestige, the collaboration between the University and businesses, excellence, training of a participative and critical student body, and the creation of a socially integrated university are some of its goals.
It could be said that the University of Valencia was created in the early 16th century, with the foundation of the General Study Centre of Valencia (1499), possibly thanks to the bull issued from Pope Alexander VI in 1501, and the privileges granted by Fernando II, dated a year later.
The University currently has a number of campuses housing its centres: the Burjassot-Paterna campus, where degrees are taught relating to engineering, science and the technology and home to the Scientific Campus; the Tarongers campus, which houses the Social and Legal Sciences building; and the Blasco Ibáñez campus, the largest campus and which houses Health, Humanities and Education facilities. In addition to these three main campuses, the University has other buildings, such as La Nau or the Botanical Gardens.
