Ramon Llull will always be remembered as one of the key writers in the Spanish Middle Age. A prolific writer, education and philosophy merge in the work of this Mallorcan figure whose life straddled the 13th and 14th centuries. The Ramon Llull University, named in honour of this philosopher, was approved by the Catalonian Parliament in 1991. The institution is unusual in that it consists of a number of "federate" educational centres.
The founding centres (what is currently known as the Faculty of Philosophy, created in 1804; the Sarria Chemistry Institute (IQS), in operation since 1916; the Blanquema Foundation and the La Salle School of Teacher Training and Engineering, all in existence for a number of years), were joined over time by other institutions (a total of 10) and the University grew to comprise the 16 centres forming part of the Ramon Llull in January 2008.
Its main objective is to "provide quality education, focused on the person, and able to respond to social needs". In order to achieve this, the university is based on a series of premises, which mention in their presentation: "quality teaching, high level research, service to the community, international projection, private enterprise, social vocation and Christian inspiration".
Small teaching groups, the relationship between university and businesses, professional practices, academic exchange programmes, and the possibility of opting for grants and scholarships for students, are some of the tools which allow these goals to be met.
