Freedom, democracy, justice, equality, independence and plurality are the principles which define this Catalonian public university created by the regional parliament on 18th June 1990 and which, in October of the same year, started teaching activities in Law, Economics and Business Studies. The name of the University pays homage to Pompeu Fabra, a key figure in the management and standardisation of the Catalan language, who in the early 20th century played a fundamental role in the recovery of this language with the publication of works such as Normes ortogràfiques (1913), Gramàtica catalana (1918) and Diccionari general de la llengua catalana (1932).
The Pompeu Fabra University aims to "train responsible professionals and citizens who are committed to civil values and contribute to the development of research". In order to do this, the educational model is based on excellence, exigency, academic rigour and personal development. Postgraduate studies are one of the institution's educational pillars. The creation of the Further Education Institute in 1993 and the inter-disciplinary nature and transversality of the course bear witness to this.
High quality education is another priority. In order to maintain high standards, a constant pedagogical innovation and renewal process is in place. One of the most frequently used tool in this innovation process is found on the virtual learning platform "Global Classroom".
Furthermore, the Pompeu Fabra university is a multilingual institution, which "reflects the linguistic wealth of its surroundings" and with an international vocation. In this regard, it develops internationalisation and participated in international programmes which allow the university community to benefit fully from the advantages of additional overseas education.
Finally, research is the University's other main activity, and one of the bases for university-social relations, to which the UPF is fully committed. The transfer of knowledge, the relationship with the business world and the creation of new scientific infrastructures - such as the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB) and the Barcelona Innovation Centre (CIBM) are some example of its actions in this area.
