The earliest background of this university can be found in 1968 with the founding of the Higher Polytechnic Institute and in 1971 with the creation of the Polytechnic University of Barcelona. This institution, focused on teaching and research in sciences, architecture and engineering, was initially created by the Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineers of Barcelona (ETSEIB), the Higher Technical School of Engineers of Terrassa (ETSEIAT), and the Higher Technical School of Architecture of Barcelona (ETSAB), in addition to other research centres. The number of centres belonging to the University grew over time, eventually requiring a change in name to the "Polytechnic University of Barcelona" to the present day "Polytechnic University of Catalonia".
The Catalonian Polytechnic is today one of the strongest Spanish universities. Its research activities are recognised worldwide, and the UPC works for improving the quality, and the intensification of educational and technological activities. In addition, a openness to internationalisation and a strong social commitment make it a modern, dynamic and constantly growing university.
Barcelona, Castelldefels, Manresa, Sant Cugat del Vallès, Terrassa and Vilanova i la Geltrú are home to the different University facilities. Barcelona houses the largest number: The Higher Technical School of Telecommunications Engineering of Barcelona, the Higher Technical School of Civil Engineering of Barcelona, the Information technology Faculty (all in the north of the city), the Higher Technical School of Architecture, the Higher Polytechnic School of Building, the Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineering, the Faculty of Mathematics and Statistics and the Faculty of Nautical Studies (at the Port of Barcelona). Barcelona is followed by Terrassa, home to the Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineering and Aeronautics, the University School of Optics and Optometry, and the Image and Multimedia Centre, among others.
