Cantabria University » Overview of the Institution

In 1985, the University of Cantabria was the name given to the institution known since 1972 as the University of Santander, but which in the third decade of the 19th century (1829) with the creation of the Nautical and Trade School and in the fourth decade (1838) with the Cantabrian Institute of Further Education, had already begun to operate in Santander through institutions devoted to teaching, which would be the seed for university institutions.

By 1933, social demand had resulted in the creation of the Summer University of Santander, but it was not until the 1970s that different centres offering university studies were opened in the region. Shortly afterwards, in 1972, what is now known as the University of Cantabria began to take shape.

With the objective of "contributing to social progress through commitment to educational and scientific excellence", this public institution strives to achieve maximum quality and scientific excellence. With results allowing it to be highly ranked in the Spanish higher education system, the University of Cantabria aims to offer its students all round education, with balanced study programmes, focusing on both theoretical and practical aspects. The work of teaching staff in this regard is a priority, and for this reason high standards of quality and assessment of teaching activities are required.

In addition to the official courses offered, the university community provides a wide range of complementary activities, both sporting and cultural (University Extra Classes), which make university life an all-round experience.
