The University of Extremadura was founded in 1973, although the first university courses did not begin to be taught until the end of the decade. From its earliest days until the present day, the University has gradually grown and has included new courses while at the same time expanding across Extremadura completing an educational map consisting of a number of university campuses: Merida, Plasencia, Caceres and Badajoz. Most degrees are studied at the latter two locations, the first to form part of the University and which were built in just three years. Each of these campuses is associated with a different line of teaching: Sciences are taught in Badajoz and Humanities in Caceres.
The growth of the University over the past thirty years has also meant constant improvement of its infrastructures. New buildings have been added, for teaching, research and multiple use. At the same time strong support has been given to the recovery and rehabilitation of historic buildings, in order to maintain their presence in towns, although the definitive location of the University seems to be on the outskirts.
The University of Extremadura is a young institution yet well consolidated and keen to accept new challenges such as European convergence in higher education, the incorporation of new technologies and its projection into new urban areas of Extremadura.
The main address of the University is:
