University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria » Overview of the Institution
The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria opened for the academic year 1989-1990 under the approval by the Canary Island Parliament, of the Canary Islands University Reorganisation Act. It was opened at 19 different centres, some of which were created at the turn of the century and other even earlier. Despite its short history, the ULPGC has an important historical background and brings together modernity and experience while at the same time promoting quality and modernity.
The ULPGC has created a virtual campus for offering an open and flexible academic model of distance learning, offering a number of postgraduate qualifications and courses, doctorates and complementary university activities.
The centre strengthens student assistance, including psycho-pedagogical and social support. The ULPGC also offers internal grants which extends those currently offered by the Ministry of Education or the Canary Islands Regional Government and which benefit some 3000 students.
The University is located on a number of campuses. The largest of these, Tafira, is located some 10 lm from the city centre, set in stunning countryside. The Obelisco campus is located in the centre of the capital and is home to studies of Humanities, Social Education and teaching. The San Cristóbal campus is in the south of the city, offering Bio-medical studies. The Montaña Cardones campus is 8 km north of the city, close to the historical town of Arucas. Here courses are taught relating to Veterinary Science, and it is home to the Food Technology laboratories.
