International Menéndez Pelayo University » Overview of the Institution

Universidad Internacional Menéndez PelayoThe Menendez Pelayo International University was founded in 1932, and it is an Independent Body of the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science, according to the by-laws which define it as a "highly cultured university". Each year it receives students from all over Spain, staff of different types and origins, graduates, postgraduates and doctors, both Spanish and from overseas, in addition to professionals from different areas who complete their training with courses at the International University.

In Spain it is one of the pioneering centres in summer courses and language and culture courses for foreigners. Its traditional summer courses fill its classrooms from June to September, with over one hundred courses and seminars on a wide variety of subjects. These are held at the Magdalena Palace in Santander (Cantabria), its most emblematic location.

In addition to Spanish courses for foreigners held throughout the academic year at the Las Llamas Campus (Santander), the UIMP also offers official postgraduate courses. The UIMP provides de-regulated or additional university teaching at its other centres.

Since 1987, the UIMP has sponsored and run the annual International Menéndez Pelayo Award, thanks to the generosity of the Cantabrian-Mexican Eulalio Ferrer.

The UIMP has several campuses all over Spain, but the most important is located in Santander, the regional capital of Cantabria.
