University of the Balearic Islands » Overview of the Institution

The University is located on the Balearic Islands, an archipelago off the south east of Spain. The capital is Palma, on the island of Majorca. This island has over 500 kilometres of coastline and enjoys a true Mediterranean climate.

The UIB is the only university in the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands, created in 1978. Young, modern and of a medium size, the UIB is a de-centralised university with a campus in Palma, centres on Minorca and Ibiza-Formentera, and a number of town-based centres.

The University offers degree courses, a senior engineering course, diplomas, technical degrees, masters courses and official doctorates. It also offers a wide range of postgraduate courses and internal qualifications. The University of the Balearic Islands has fifteen mentions of quality from ANECA on doctorate courses which accredit its standard of teaching and research.

The University considers students to be the key to its educational project, and for this reason offers multi-faceted training and high-quality teaching and research in order to train people capable in all disciplines which will be the driving force of society in the future. The UIB undertakes research as a fundamental part of its activity and in recent years has consolidated its prestige as a research institute both at a national level, where it is among the top institutions in terms of scientific production per researcher, and at international level, thanks to research partnerships with other European institutions.

It is a university which while keeping true to its roots is open to the world, and for this reason, in recent years, it has joined strong international networks which attract a large number of overseas students.
