The University of Granada was founded in 1531 by the Emperor Charles V. In recent years it has seen the fastest growth rate in its history, which has placed it among the best universities in Spain. Some 70,000 people are directly involved with the University, including students, tutors, and administrative and service staff.
The university centres and departments are distributed around different locations in the city of Granada. In addition, the institution has two university campuses in Ceuta and Melilla (northern Africa). The historical background of these towns makes these multicultural environments where the co-habitation of different cultures making up the population is very interesting.
The University of Granada is particularly concerned with high quality research, and the growth scientific production places it among the top Spanish universities. Its researchers concentrate of traditional areas of research and especially support those less developed areas which may be of interest to society. Thanks to collaboration with local companies and institutions it has been possible to increase the funds available for research.
The University of Granada plays an active role in the university staff and student mobility schemes and other research programmes. Through bilateral agreements or specific conventions between groups of universities, it works in collaboration with universities from different geographical areas. However there are three more intense areas of cooperation given the cultural links of the city - with the European Union, Latin America and Maghreb. As a result, each year the University of Granada hosts thousands of tutors, students and administrative staff from around the world, who attend Spanish language and culture courses, teach or work in research groups.
