The University of Lleida is the former Lleida School of Higher Education, established in the 14th century under a papal bull from Boniface VIII. The University of Lleida as we know it today, however, was created in 1991 under an order by the Catalonian Parliament. It is therefore technically a young institution, but with a long historical background.
In an effort to improve its infrastructure, the University of Lleida facilities are divided among a number of campuses located in the town of Lleida. In January 2008, the University has the Faculty of Law and Economics, Higher School of Agriculture, Arts Faculty, Educational Sciences Faculty, Higher Polytechnic School; Faculty of Medicine and the University School of Nursing. At also has three associated educational centres: the National Institute of Physical Education in Catalonia (INEFC), the University "Terres de Lleida" School of Tourism, and the University School of Employment Relations.
The University of Lleida offers the university community quality in education and services in an academic institution with a clear focus on excellence. Its "integrating educational model connected with local needs", links to the importance granted to the role of the University as a primordial agent for transmitting knowledge and as promoter of integral development in its social and economic setting.
