University Halls of Residence

The Colegios Mayores (University Residences) have a long tradition. The 14th, 15th and 16th centuries were the classic era of these establishments. Most universities founded in Spain and Latin America owe their origin to the creation of a Colegio Mayor. After a slump lasting a number of centuries the 1943 Universities Act restored Colegios Mayores with a view to providing students with "university education in all its aspects".
