University of Barcelona » Overview of the Institution

Universidad de BarcelonaFounded on 3rd November 1450 under the royal prerogative of Alfonso the Magmanamous, the University of Barcelona dated back to 50 years earlier, in 1398, with a letter from the Catalonian King Martin which indicated the need in Barcelona for an Estudi General (a General Study School). After this came several centuries which have combined periods of development and decline, and have resulted in one of the most important universities in Spain, both in number of students and courses on offer, and at research level.

Over 5000 people carry out research in a wide range of areas in an institution which in early 2008 had over 200 consolidated groups and first class facilities, such as the Institute for Biomedical Research.

The large number of university facilities are location on different campuses: the Humanities campus, home to the Faculties of Philology, Geography and History, Philosophy, Mathematics and the Rector's Office; the La Diagonal campusGateway to Knowledge, housing the Faculties of Fine Art, Economic Sciences, Law, Biology and Pharmacy; the Bellvitge Health Sciences Campus, with the University School of Nursing, some of the schools of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Dentistry; the August Pi y Sunyer Clinical Medicine Campus, housing the Faculty of Medicine; the Mundet University of Barcelona Campus, for Educational Science and Psychology; and the Torribera Food and Nutrition Campus.

With the University of Barcelona Group, the University joins forces with other independent entities but for which the university marks the "political and strategic guidelines" in order to offer a fuller service, and "complement and strengthen the activities and results of the University of Barcelona in different areas". The entities belonging to the Group include the Ongoing Training Institute IL3, the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation and the Barcelona Science Park Foundation, among others.

Internationalisation is one of the University's priorities, and Governing Bodies are committed to the signing of agreements with universities and institutions from other countries and the participation in international mobility schemes.
