University of Alcala » Overview of the Institution

1499 saw the creation of the University of Alcalá. Cardinal Cisneros founded one of the Spanish educational institutions with the richest and longest history. Since its beginnings, the University of Alcalá has been a modern university, committed to progress, and which has brought together the best of tradition and of the new methods used in higher education institutions.

After the splendour of the Golden Age, when the University was attended by illustrious students such as Quevedo or Lope de Vega, came a difficult period for the university in Alcalá. Having been moved to Madrid after the selling off of church land in the 19th century, it was not until the late 20th century (1977) that the University re-opened its doors in its original location: Alcalá de Henares.

The key objective for the University is "offering a public higher education service through teaching, research and the extension of the best culture of our time to our surroundings". Quality, striving for excellence, and commitment are some of the characteristics which define this university model, whose main focal point is on students. The University of Alcalá de Henares runs its activities between the campuses in Alcalá de Henares (external campus and city campus) and Guadajalara. In addition to these goals, the University of Alcalá works in other areas, defined as "true signs of identity" and includes among its "commitments":

  • The teaching of and care for our Language, a symbol of which is the Cervantes Award presented each year by TRH The King and Queen of Spain at the Paraninfo (Lecture Hall) in Alcalá.
  • The nurturing of our very special links with Latin America
  • Caring for historical heritage, as befits a University which is a UNESCO Heritage of Humanity.
  • The promotion of respect for the environment with novel experiences such as the Juan Carlos I Royal Botanical Garden or the Ecocampus office
