Autonomous University of Barcelona » Overview of the Institution

The Autonomous University of Barcelona is a public university founded in 1968 and based on four principles: "the free appointment of teaching staff, the free admission of students (but with numerous clausus), the free elaboration of study plans and the free administration of resources available to the University". Since its creation, the institution has become one of the most prestigious Spanish universities, with a wide range of courses on offer and a high standard of research activities.

Its facilities are divided between a number of locations: the Bellaterra campus, the largest installation and central office of the University Science and Technology Park, located in Cerdanyola del Vallès; Sabadell, a campus in operation since the academic year 2004-2005; and Sant Pau, an area devised as a Health Sciences complex.

In addition to the range of courses of the University itself (tens of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, continuous training, language teaching), there are also courses run by the UAB Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation which "develops and completes educational projects to complement the academic offer, and promote new projects for research, assessment and services". Together with the Foundation, the Autonomous University of Barcelona runs a number of social responsibility and commitment initiatives, such as the Equality Observatory, and the Development Cooperation Office.
