The University of Alicante defines itself in its Strategic Plan "Horizon 2012" as a "public, dynamic and innovative institution, with an overseas projection and benchmark campus, whose mission is the overall training of its students and commitment to the social advance and improvement, through the creation and transmission of knowledge and cultural, scientific and technological development". Created in 1979, based on the Centre for University Studies (CEU, part of the University of Valencia) founded in 1968, and with a historical background dating back to the University of Orihuela (created in the 16th Century), the University of Alicante is one of the most important agents for growth and development in the region.
With a campus measuring approximately one million square metres in total, a student body of over 28,000 in 2006-07, a University Museum and its Science Park project in full flow, the University of Alicante is gearing up to become one of the most prestigious universities in Spain. In order to achieve this, an increased relationship with companies and an emphasis on research activities from the outset join forces with daily efforts to achieve a high-quality, transparent University which encourages the critical spirit of its students and maintains a significant overseas presence. In this regard, each year the University increases the number of agreements signed with other universities and Further Education institutions around the world which allow student exchanges in order to offer them a truly international education.
The University of Alicante offers official Undergraduate and Postgraduate degree courses (including Masters and Doctorate courses), internal postgraduate and specialist studies, distance learning postgraduate courses and a wide range of complementary training, including languages. In addition to the main campus, activities also take place at Benissa, Orihuela, Concentaina, Biar, La Nucía and Jijona during different times of the year.
