University of Deusto » Overview of the institution

Universidad de DeustoThe University of Deusto was opened in 1886, and can be considered a pioneering institutions in many ways. The pursuit of academic excellence and quality have made this one of the top universities in Spain. In the early 20th century, when the institution was still known as "Deusto Commercial University", it produced the first graduates in Economic Sciences, 16 years before the official recognition of these studies, which are one of the classic courses at his Basque institution. It was also the first European university to extend the ECTS credit system to all its courses. It currently has two campuses: in Bilbao and in San Sebastian, between which the University's buildings are divided.

A private Jesuit university, it forms part of the Federation of Universities, Faculties and Institutions of Higher Education (UNIJES), alongside the University of Comillas (Madrid), the Sarriá Chemical Institute (Ramon Llull University) of Barcelona, and the ESADE Business School (Barcelona), among others. In addition to the vocation of serving society and the objectives of "faith, justice and culture" as a Jesuit university, the institution also supports the need for these to "develop in a dynamic climate of dialogue with the religious, cultural or social agents whose cooperation is fundamental for values such as peace, justice, harmony, human rights and respect, shared and sharable between believers and non-believers".

The Faculty of Theology, Higher Institute of Religious Science, the Department of Human and Religious Sciences and the Pastoral Service allow students and other members of the university community to keep in touch with the Catholic Faith.

With a strong commitment to internationalisation, the University has agreements with higher education institutions from around the world, and each year receives overseas students who arrive as part of their academic studies, postgraduate courses and additional training and language schemes.
